IFC Photos 2
25milefield1945
Photo of Eielson AFB when it was called 25 milefield it was hastely constructed in WW2 and used when they flew fighter aircraft to Russia. The photo was taken in 1945

A telephoto shot of a KC-135 as it heads north from Eielson AFB
b36 hanger
Large building right center of the photo was the largest hanger at Eielson was made to hold the B-36 Bomber.
clear sign
Sign at the entrance to Clear BMEWS site. Three of these sites were built in the late 1950's to scan the Sky's for incoming Russian ICBM'S. This one the others were at Thule Greenland and Fylingdales England
eielson KC135 row
A look down the runway at Eielson AFB all the aircraft you see are KC-135 tanker aircraft their mission was to refuel the bombers on their way if the "Go Code" was given.
M-Dome door
Sign over the door to the headquarters building at Murphy Dome. MD was run by the Air Force they were the early warning radar for the Nike Sites in Alaska.
ride at m-dome
Your webmaster was lucky enough to be sent to Murphy Dome for a presentation on how the site worked. Best way to explain what I saw is this "Straight out of Dr. Strangelove the movie" We were sent by Chopper to MD and here is our ride waiting for us to complete the presentation.
eds rb47 ed driving
Around Eielson AFB there are several wrecked aircraft here is Ed Hansen sitting on the edge of a B47 cockpit.
eds rb47 wreck
Same B47 looks like it was stripped of usable parts then used for firefighting practice.
u2-234
Flying from Eielson AFB were some of the "Black Aircraft" here is one of them as it flys right over our Admin Building. It is a RB57F Canberra. Their primary mission was to fly close to Russia at very high altitude and collect air samples looking for evidence of Russian nuclear tests.

Hanger that supported the "Black Aircraft" at Eielson AFB note the sign with a plane with extra long wings. A dead giveaway of planes like the U-2 and RB57F
b btry bird up
Nike units all did a yearly practice firing most units did that at White Sands NM but the Alaska sites did theirs in Alaska. For a while the Anchorage sites fired from Site Summit but as the downrange area got more populated they switched and came up to B Battery in Fairbanks. This a look from the Admin / IFC building at B Battery up the hill to the launcher area. Interesting fact here is that the launcher area needed to be some distance from the IFC because if it was to close the Missile tracking radar could not track it's target at launch.
B Btry shoot2
This is the missile in flight object in the lower left is a corner of one of the tracking radars. Practice firings were done 2 ways either they used a computer generated target or a actual aircraft. When doing it that way the radars were set at a 180 degree so you locked on a aircraft flying south and shot a missile north.

Good up close shot of B Batteries HiPower radar antenna.
rb47-5
Next to the runway fence is a RB47. B47 bomber's replaced the B36 the RB'S were used for "Black Operations" they could be used to collect air samples looking for Russian Nuclear tests or flight into Russian air space where they collect Radio & Radar intelligence
135-crew
MY RIDE HOME after spending almost a year without taking leave to go back home I got leave and also a "Hop' on a KC135 which was going back to Minot ND
C119-1
Special Services arranged flights to Unalakleet Alaska on the west coast where they would go Salmon fishing. Took that trip just for the ride away from the site one day. We went with Sgt. Rose who went to fish also most of the flight crew went fishing
Clear 1
The large radar antennas that were a signature of the BMEWS sites. At the time I was in Alaska Site Clear was very huss huss and this is as close as you could get.

Another shot fo Clear BMEWS this is the Microwave that linked Clear to the rest of the Norad system.
b29-1
At Eielson AFB there is a old B29 called "The Lady of the Lake" which is partly sunk in a small lake. The story of the plane is this the RB29 tail  # 44-62214 was used for detecting evidence of Soviet nuclear testing flying from Alaska to Japan and back. It apparently suffered a ground accident tha rendered the plane unflyable. Then it was put in this small lake and used for a while for water rescue training.

Another interior shot of the C-119 Unaalakleet fishing trip.

KC-135 crash
Remains of a KC-135 that crashed on takeoff killing the crew and a guard in the guard shack at the entrance to Eielson. At that time the shack was in line with the end of the runway. Years later the entrance was relocated and the new guard shack was named in honor of guard that was killed.

An overhead shot of the complete Murphy Dome complex. hardly anything remains of this today except a remotely ran radar setup.
